Timed Section on Gibraltar Road

We are planning to provide (optional) timing for the climb up Gibraltar Road from the beginning at El Cielito Road to the top (aid station on East Camino Cielo).   This climb is about 6 ˝ miles and climbs about 2700’ with an average grade of nearly 8% (maximum grade is 12 or 13%).

When you enter this section of Gibraltar there will be a timing chute on the right hand side with a monitor.  If you want your climb timed simply ride through the chute, and a monitor will record your bib number.  At the top of the climb at the aid station there will be another timing chute, and as you ride though that one your finish time will be recorded.  The results should be posted at the finish line when you arrive there.  If you would rather not have your time recorded, simply proceed without riding through the timing chutes.

While this is mainly for your own edification, there will be some modest age-group prizes at the finish line for those with the best time in their group.   The age groups have not been established yet but will reflect the age distribution of the registered Century riders.

Note that you will not be starting this climb fresh as a daisy as you will have ridden 38+ miles with quite a bit of gain before you get to the start.  Also, while t here will be an aid station halfway up Gibraltar Road, the clock is continuing to run when/if you stop there.

For those who have ridden Gibraltar Road before, the aid station is to the east 1/3 of a mile from the junction of Gibraltar and East Camino Cielo, so you’re not quite done when you get to that junction.  Another 1/3 of a mile and a bit more climb.
